Early Life and Career Beginnings
Gina is of Puerto Rican and African-American descent. She grew up in San Francisco and developed a love for dance at a young age, training in classical dance, then during the 1990s, she shifted her attention to a different art, in acting. She made her television debut in an episode of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” alongside Will Smith, then other projects she had during this period included guest roles in “True Colors”, “Melrose Place”, and “Days of Our Lives”.
In 1993, she was cast in her first recurring role on television, as Dr. Diana Roth in the crime series “Silk Stalkings” which aired on CBS. The show featured two detectives who work on crimes of passion in Florida, which often involved cases of a sexual nature.
The series lasted for a year, but concurrently she started working on film projects, debuting in a minor role in “Lambada”. In 1995, she gained a bit of attention with her work in the erotic film “Showgirls”, starring Elizabeth Berkley and Kyle MacLachlan. It tells the story of a drifter who becomes a stripper, working her way up to become a showgirl.
Continued Acting Work
A year later Ravera was cast in the film “Get on the Bus” as the character Gina; directed by Spike Lee, the story focuses on a group of African-American men who take a cross country bus trip so that they could participate in the historic Million Man March. In 1997, she had another notable role, in the film “Soul Food” which starred Vanessa L. Williams and Vivica A. Fox, about an extended African-American family going through many trials.
She then focused her attention back to television, working as a guest for “NYPD Blue”, “In the House” and in “Malcolm & Eddie”. She was then given one of her first main television roles in “Time of Your Life” which ran from 1999 to 2001. The series starred Jennifer Love Hewitt, and is a spin-off from “Party of Five”, following Jennifer’s character as she moves to New York City. The show was unsuccessful, however, as it went to hiatus due to low ratings, eventually leading to its cancellation. While working on the show, Gina made a three-episode appearance in “The Fugitive”.
Recent Projects
In the latter part of Gina’s career, she’s focused her attention on television work, and including making guest appearances in popular shows such as include “Charmed”, “Boston Legal”, and “Inconceivable”. In 2005, she became a regular cast member in “The Closer”, which would become one of her most recognizable roles. The police procedural series follows the story of a detective who is a master interrogator, giving her the title of “Closer” as she manages to persuade criminals to confess.
Gina stayed with the show for four years, and earned two nominations for her work. Concurrently, she had a recurring role in “ER” as Dr. Bettina DeJesus.
In 2007 she returned to film, playing as Denzel Washington’s character’s wife for the biographical film “The Great Debaters”, other stars included Forest Whitaker and Kimberly Elise. The story is based on the Wiley College debating team who defeat the reigning debate champions, though their achievements were left uncredited as they weren’t full members of the debating society.
After making more guest appearances, she took a break from acting in 2014, only returning four years later for a three-episode role in the series “Arrow”, which is based on the DC Comics character Green Arrow, and airs on CW.
Personal Life
Gina prefers to keep her romantic life away from the public, and many speculate that she is single.
She once made a public Valentine’s Day greeting implying that she has been in a relationship. It could also be possible that she was greeting her husband, though it has never been confirmed.
During her free time, she participates in and contributes to charitable organizations. She has supported organizations which give more opportunities to women in the entertainment industry, especially in lesser-known work such as production and screenwriting.
